AVAILABLE POSITIONS
Library Assistant (Part Time) - Franklin Public Library
The Library Assistant is responsible for making library resources readily available to patrons and staff. The employees in this position perform support staff duties in a public library and related work as required. The Library Assistant is a beginning level position in the library field, requiring interest in and capacity to acquire a working knowledge of library techniques and procedures. The work is performed independently and reports directly to the Branch Manager.
Work includes, but is not limited to:
- Interact with and assist patrons
- Perform circulation desk duties
- Provide technology support
- Sort and shelve books
- Issue and receive library materials
- Register patrons
- Receive payments
- Help recommend and process new/discarded materials
- Maintain statistics
- Assist in programming and research requests
- Assist with general library promotions
- Perform general cleaning around the library
- Participate in continuing education opportunities
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and library patrons
- Excellent customer service and service orientation
- Ability to learn library rules, procedures, and practices
- Ability to understand written and oral instructions
- Knowledge and proficiency with Library Automated System
- Familiarity with technology, including but not limited to PCs, smartphones, databases,
printing/scanning/faxing, etc. - Capacity for attention to detail and accuracy
- Accurate spelling, word processing, and filing skills
- Understanding of the Dewey Decimal System
- Time management and multitasking
- General care of library materials – regular inspection, maintenance/repair and an ability to
lift up to 40 lbs - Making Decisions – analyze info and evaluate results to choose the best solution and
solve problems - Critical thinking
- General cleaning such as light dusting, sweeping floors, etc.
- Ability to work independently
- High school diploma; or equivalency and any related courses; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities.
- Pennsylvania Act 34 Criminal Record Check, Act 151 (Child Abuse) Background Check, and Act 114 Federal (FBI) Background checks required.
This is an hourly position at $12.00/hour with expectations of 20-25 hours/week on average. The typical schedule includes weekdays and a Saturday rotation.
